A total of 452 leptospirosis cases were reported in the Negros Island Region (NIR) in 2025, a health official said.
Adrian Hort Ramos, Assistant Director of the Department of Health – Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR), in an interview with the media, said the number is subject to change after the inclusion of delayed reporting and verification of cases.
Ramos said they expect more cases this year, given the current extreme weather conditions that cause heavy rainfall and flooding in the region.
“Since last year, we have seen a significant increase in leptospirosis cases, especially during rainy days and flooding,” Ramos said.
“It is alarming for us that the numbers shoot up, and that is why we are constantly reminding the public to not wade in floodwaters as much as possible.”
Leptospirosis is acquired not only by wading in flooded zones, as the illness can be spread through such entry points as the eyes and nose, he said.
Ramos pointed out that they recognize some individuals must navigate through flooded zones to retrieve their possessions, but they must get prompt medical care to guarantee their safety.
The DOH provides free prophylaxis medication for leptospirosis, he said.
He warned against self-treatment, saying a doctor’s evaluation is essential for managing leptospirosis. (PNA)
