Pork prices in Negros Occidental have remained relatively low, reflecting a stable supply following the province’s recovery from African swine fever (ASF).

“Despite concerns of rising prices, the most expensive pork on markets is around P340 per kilo, while the cheapest is P250,” Provincial Veterinarian Office chief Dr. Placeda Lemana said.

“At the auction market, live pigs range from P120 to P150 per kilo. Supply has increased because we no longer have ASF cases, which is why prices have dropped,” she added.

Looking ahead to the holiday season, Lemana noted that demand is expected to rise as consumers purchase pork for celebrations.

“We are monitoring the market closely. Prices may increase slightly before Christmas, but typically, buyers stock up ahead of the holidays,” she added.

Lemana also addressed the impact of recent Typhoon “Tino” on livestock.

“The worst-affected areas were Districts 4 and 5, particularly barangays near rivers. Many carabaos and cattle died because they were tied up and could not escape the flash floods. Poultry and other pigs were largely unaffected, and prices remained stable,” she explained.

For now, residents can expect a steady supply of pork and poultry, with careful monitoring in place to ensure market stability during the peak holiday season./CJ, WDJ
