Cauayan Mayor John Rey Tabujara has denounced what he described as the “senseless and cowardly” killings of two barangay officials in separate incidents in the municipality, calling the victims innocent civilians whose only intention was to serve their communities.
The victims — a barangay kagawad and a purok chairwoman — were recently gunned down, with the Armando Sumayang Jr. Command of the New People’s Army later claiming responsibility.
The rebel group accused the two of being military informants, allegations immediately rejected by the Philippine Army’s 15th Infantry Battalion.
Tabujara, in a forceful statement, said the accusations were baseless and the killings unjustifiable.
He stressed that the slain officials were “ordinary citizens — fathers and mothers, sons and daughters — who wanted nothing more than to live peacefully, serve their community, and secure a better future for their families.”
“These individuals did not deserve to die at the hands of those who choose hatred and terror,” he said.
The mayor also emphasized that the local government is standing firmly with law enforcement agencies and peace advocates in seeking accountability for what he described as “heinous crimes.”
“We will not remain silent,” he declared.
“Silence helps the killers — courage saves lives.”
Tabujara appealed to Cauayan residents to remain vigilant and support government efforts to maintain order. He urged the public to report suspicious activities, cooperate with authorities, and strengthen community solidarity.
“Inaction enables injustice. Unity is stronger than fear,” he added.
Tabujara said that through courage, cooperation and a collective stand for peace, Cauayan can reclaim its sense of security and protect its people from further violence./CJ, WDJ
