A mountain slope along the national highway at Barangay Mambaroto in Negros Occidental’s Sipalay City loosened again and triggered another landslide following heavy downpours brought by Typhoon “Tino,” the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Office confirmed.
According to City DRRM Coordinator Dionilo Bogtae, the same portion of the slope in Camp Valdez had already collapsed over the weekend when continuous rains caused soil erosion, temporarily blocking the road.
The City Engineering Office immediately conducted clearing operations and declared the road passable shortly after.
However, another round of torrential rain on Tuesday night, November 4, led to a fresh soil collapse in the same area.
“We have stationed heavy equipment on standby in case new soil movements occur,” Bogtae said, emphasizing that their teams are closely monitoring the site to ensure motorists’ safety and prevent prolonged traffic disruptions.
The affected road section has been cleared and reopened to vehicles, though authorities warned that the slope remains unstable due to the saturated ground.
Despite the repeated landslides, Bogtae assured that the city recorded no casualties or injuries from “Tino” and remains under close watch for potential secondary hazards./CJ, WDJ
