The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) is set to launch a detailed geological investigation into a ground crack and land subsidence reported at Barangay Mambaroto in Negros Occidental’s Sipalay City, which experts say may have resulted from a possible sinkhole collapse.

MGB in Negros Island Region Director Benigno Cesar Espejo said initial assessments from field personnel indicate that the incident could be linked to the natural characteristics of the area’s terrain, particularly the presence of limestone formations beneath the surface in Camp Valdez.

“The area’s slope contains limestone, which is soluble and can gradually erode due to continuous water flow,” Espejo explained.

“Such conditions make it prone to sinkhole activity, especially after heavy rainfall or ground movement,” he added.

A sinkhole collapse occurs when underlying limestone dissolves over time, creating underground voids that eventually cause the surface to give way.

MGB noted that a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) survey will be conducted in the coming days to determine the crack’s extent and depth, as well as to assess potential risks to residents and infrastructure.

While the affected road remains passable, local authorities are considering rerouting heavy vehicles to minimize ground vibrations that could worsen the subsidence. The drainage canal beside the highway has already been clogged by displaced soil from the collapse, prompting public works teams to conduct clearing operations.

Espejo emphasized that the results of the GPR survey will guide the city government in implementing preventive measures and land-use restrictions in the affected zone.

Sipalay City, known for its hilly terrain and mineral-rich land, has experienced previous geohazard concerns, prompting continuous monitoring from MGB and the local disaster risk reduction office.

Authorities are urging residents in nearby areas to remain vigilant and immediately report any signs of new ground movement or structural cracks./CJ, WDJ
