The Bacolod City government is initiating a reunification program for mendicant Badjaos in a move to facilitate their safe return to their places of origin, particularly in Mindanao.

Data showed an inter-agency operation over the weekend rounded up 19 Badjao people, including nine from a Badjao community — seven adults and two minors; seven minors classified as children-at-risk; two elderly persons with disabilities; and one individual with signs of mental illness.

The Badjaos were found at Bacolod Public Plaza and near the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. port at the Reclamation Area.

They were brought to the Bacolod Arts and Youth Sports Center, where they were assessed, profile and underwent orientation.

Complaints about Badjaos harassing women in public places and coercing locals to give them money prompted Mayor Greg Gasataya to order the creation of surveillance and apprehension teams.

“The local government remains committed to assisting mendicants in need while maintaining a safe environment for all Bacolodnons,” the mayor said in a statement.

Department of Social Services and Development head Richelle Mangga underscored the need to conduct proper case management and intervention.

“This is also our response to complaints about concerning actions from members of the Badjao community that affect public safety. We want to strengthen our visibility with other agencies involved,” she said.

The inter-agency team said that while the Badjaos are still under the assistance of the city government, they are “actively coordinating with the local government units, particularly the social welfare and development offices, of the rescued individuals’ originating localities.” (PNA)
