The General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) in Negros Occidental has urged the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) in Western Visayas to approve a substantial increase in the minimum wage for private sector workers amid the region’s rising cost of living.
GAWA Secretary General Wennie Sancho said the labor group submitted its manifestation and position paper to RTWPB in Western Visayas Chairperson Atty. Sixto Rodriguez on Monday, October 13.
“As representatives of the working class, we believe that a wage adjustment is necessary to alleviate the struggles of workers in the region,” Sancho said.
He noted that inflation and the continuing increase in the prices of basic goods and services have severely affected workers’ ability to afford essential needs.
“The purchasing power of workers has been eroded. Their wages have not kept pace with the rising costs,” he added.
GAWA’s appeal also includes regular wage reviews and adjustments to align with inflation and economic changes; and automatic wage indexation to ensure salaries are adjusted based on the cost of living.
Sancho said an increase in wages would not only improve workers’ quality of life but also have a positive economic impact by boosting consumer spending and supporting local businesses.
“We believe that these demands are reasonable and necessary to protect the welfare of workers in the private sector,” he said.
“A higher wage will benefit both workers and the local economy,” he added.
GAWA expressed optimism that the wage board will respond favorably to their appeal.
“We are ready to work with the government and employers to find a fair and balanced solution,” Sancho said./CJ, WDJ
