Filipina tennis star Alex Eala saw her Suzhou Open run come to an end after a quarterfinal loss to sixth-seed Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (0).
World No. 70 Golubic broke Eala in the opening game of the match but the fourth-seeded Eala quickly responded with a dominant service game.
Showing composure against Golubic’s tricky one-handed slice backhands, the 20-year-old Filipino powered through to claim the first set, 6-2.
Momentum shifted in the second set as Eala struggled with errors, falling behind 0-3 before Golubic closed it out, 6-2, to force a decider.
The third set had both players engaging in long rallies and trading games to stay level at 3-all, 5-all and, eventually, 6-all.
In the decisive tiebreak, Golubic proved steadier, shutting out Eala 7-0 to complete the comeback.
With the victory, Golubic advances to the semifinals where she will face second seed Tatjana Maria of Germany, ranked World No. 44. (ABS-CBN News)
