Defending champion Italy advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIVB Men’s World Championship after sweeping Argentina, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22, at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday, September 21.

Outside hitter Alessandro Michieletto scored 15 points off 13 attacks, one block and one ace for the Italians, who wrapped up the match in one hour and 37 minutes.

Opposite Yuri Romano contributed 14 points, including four aces, while outside hitter Mattia Bottolo added 13 points off 12 attacks and one ace.

“I am very happy because my team played very solidly. There were a lot of long rallies against Argentina. We played very well in this situation,” Italian coach Fernandino de Giorgi said.

Italy, a four-time champion, now awaits the winner of the Belgium-Finland match for a spot in the semifinals.

The Italians were better on offense, 45-38 in attack points and 6-2 from the service line.

Outside hitter Luciano Vicentin led Argentina with 15 points off 13 attacks, one block and one ace.

“Of course, we gave it all we have at a hundred percent, but in the end, the result was 3-0. Today was not our day. It was the day of Italy, so congratulations to them! We will come back next year for another tournament, and we will try to put Argentina on the top,” Vicentin said in the post-match interview.

Middle blocker Joaquin Gallego scored nine points off seven attacks, one block, and one ace, while skipper Agustin Loser Bruno and Luciano Palonsky chipped in eight points each. (PNA)
