A man who allegedly stabbed a police officer in Santa Catalina, Negros Oriental, is facing a complaint for direct assault against an agent of a person in authority, an official said yesterday.

Lt. Stephen Polinar, spokesperson of the Negros Oriental Police Provincial Office (NOrPPO), said the police officer, who is assigned at the Santa Catalina police station, was seriously injured after the suspect stabbed him on Wednesday evening, September 3.

“Prior to the stabbing of the policeman, the suspect was already intoxicated and wanted to buy some liquor, but the woman tending the store told him to go home. He then grabbed the woman and stabbed her around seven times,” Polinar said.

Responding officers arrived at the scene in the remote village of Milagrosa, but the woman, identified as Loisa Lagundi, had already been taken to the hospital. The officers then proceeded to the suspect’s house in the same barangay after receiving information that he was hiding there.

While being arrested, the suspect attacked and stabbed one of the responding policemen, hitting him in the eye. A report from Ace Hospital in Bayawan City said a major artery in the victim’s eye was hit, causing heavy bleeding, Polinar said.

The officer, with the rank of Police Executive Master Sergeant, was transferred to a hospital in Dumaguete for further treatment.

Polinar said the suspect, who is now detained, will also be facing separate charges for attacking and stabbing Lagundi. (PNA)
