Up to 17 cyclones are expected to develop or enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this month until January 2026, the weather bureau said yesterday.
Two or three cyclones are expected in the country this August, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
The low pressure area (LPA) being monitored outside the PAR developed into a tropical depression at around 2:00 p.m. yesterday.
It was last tracked 1,350 kilometers east-northeast of extreme Northern Luzon.
Pagasa said this is not expected to have a direct effect on the country.
The prevailing southwest monsoon will continue to bring rains, particularly in several areas across Luzon, it added.
The country could experience two to four cyclones in September and October; two or three in November; one or two in December; and zero or one in January, according to Pagasa.
Meanwhile, Pagasa said a tropical cyclone-like vortex could possibly develop in the eastern part of Pagasa monitoring domain from August 1 to 7. This, however, has a slim chance of developing into a cyclone.
The said tropical cyclone-like vortex could possibly enter PAR from August 8 to 14, but is still unlikely to develop into a cyclone, Pagasa said. (PNA)
