A young Filipino football standout is starting to turn heads following his recent stellar performance for FC Barcelona.
Pedro “Dro” Fernández, a 17-year-old Filipino-Spanish player, impressed in his first game for FC Barcelona’s senior squad after he scored a goal in their 3-1 preseason victory over Vissel Kobe in Japan.
“Unforgettable day. Long live Barça!” Fernandez wrote in a social media post.
Fernández, who was born to a Filipina mother and a Galician father, entered the contest in the 79th minute and only logged 12 minutes of action, but still made the most of his senior debut with Barcelona by extending their cushion to two following his goal three minutes from time.
The Nigran, Spain native, is a product of Barcelona’s youth academy La Masia, and has represented Spain’s youth teams.
Fernández also has an active contract with FC Barcelona’s Under-19 squad, which is expected to end in 2027.
He previously played for Val Minor School in his early years before he turned heads and earned himself an opportunity to further develop his talents with Barcelona.
While it is yet to be known whether Fernández will officially earn minutes for Barcelona’s first team in the 2025-2026 campaign, he has already gotten high praise from manager Hansi Flick.
“Drew trained with us at the end of last season,” said Flick, according to Foot Africa.
“He’s a gifted player with immense potential. I want to congratulate La Masia for the outstanding work they’re doing.” (ABS-CBN News)
