More qualified Negrenses have availed the P20 per kilo rice in Negros Occidental through the “Bigasan ng Bayan” of the provincial government and the Federation of Irrigators’ Association of Central Negros – Bago River Irrigation System (FIACN-BRIS).

On Friday, July 18, about 500 beneficiaries in Talisay City were able to buy five kilos of quality rice each for only P100.

In an interview, FIACN-BRIS president Pedro Limpangog said they welcome another opportunity to sell rice at a more affordable price in the city just north of Bacolod, following the launch of the P20-per-kilo rice in Pulupandan town in southern Negros last month.

“Those who availed were glad to buy the P20-per-kilo rice. Mayor Rowena Lizares was also thankful that we were able to bring the Bigasan ng Bayan to Talisay City,” he added.

The 2,500 kilos of rice sold came from the palay production of a farmer, who is also an irrigation association leader, from Barangay Mabini, Valladolid town.

Those qualified to buy are senior citizens, persons with disabilities, solo parents, and beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program, who purchased rice at the Bigasan ng Bayan set up in Talisay City public plaza.

Limpangog said the Bigasan ng Bayan aligns with the “Benteng Bigas, Meron (BBM) Na!” program of the national government.

“This initiative is part of the province’s ongoing commitment to food security and public service, making sure that essential goods remain within reach of those who need them most,” he added.

The provincial government is working with the FIACN-BRIS, which is under the National Irrigation Administration – Negros Occidental Irrigation Management Office, for its Dagyaw Project to produce high-yield rice at a lower production cost. (PNA)
