In a renewed push for urban cleanliness and revitalization, Bacolod Mayor Greg Gasataya has launched a sustained cleanup and rehabilitation initiative targeting Bacolod City’s three major public markets and the iconic public plaza.
Gasataya personally led flushing operations at Burgos, Libertad and Central markets over the weekend, aiming to address long-standing sanitation and drainage issues, with the support of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Bacolod.
“This is not a one-time event. We are committed to making this a regular initiative to ensure our public markets remain clean, functional and safe for vendors and consumers alike,” Gasataya said.
He urged residents and stakeholders to work together in maintaining cleanliness.
The mayor emphasized that the program is part of a broader effort to unclog drainage systems and prevent flooding in congested commercial zones.
A similar clearing operation began on Friday, July 4, in Barangay 12, an area historically prone to flooding due to blocked drainage.
Simultaneously, city workers from the General Services Office and City Engineer’s Office conducted a cleanup drive at the Bacolod Public Plaza, removing trash, overgrowth and other visual obstructions.
“Our plaza is more than just a park. It’s where Bacolodnons gather, rest and celebrate. We’re restoring its dignity, safety and beauty — not just for now, but for the generations to come,” Gasataya said.
The mayor has also ordered a series of enhancements at the public plaza, including the pruning of overgrown trees, removal of old and damaged Christmas lights, repair of non-functional lighting to improve nighttime visibility, siphoning of septic tanks, comfort room upgrades, repainting of structures and removal of clutter, and coordination with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority for the rehabilitation of the central water fountain.
“These aren’t just cosmetic changes. They’re part of a long-term plan to restore the vibrancy of our shared spaces,” Gasataya said.
“The dream of a revitalized Bacolod is becoming a reality — one cleanup at a time,” he added.
The mayor assured the public that these efforts will continue, not only to improve aesthetics but to ensure that Bacolod’s public spaces remain inclusive, functional and reflective of the city’s aspirations./CJ, WDJ
