The Department of Education-Negros Island Region (DepEd-NIR) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring continuous learning in areas affected by the ongoing unrest of Mt. Kanlaon.

In a report yesterday, the DepEd Schools Division of Negros Occidental said Regional Director Ramir Uytico led the discussion of plans to address the impacts of the volcanic eruption during the coordination meeting held at La Castellana National High School on Tuesday, June 17, the first in a series of engagements scheduled with the five affected schools divisions.

Stressing the need for a unified response, Uytico said that at all levels, DepEd must work closely with partners to implement the necessary response measures.

“We cannot allow any calamity or emergency, including this one, to disrupt our children’s learning, just as we stood firm in ensuring continuity during the pandemic,” he added.

The coordination meeting was attended by other education officials and school heads, as well as representatives from the Office of Civil Defense, Department of Health, Department of Social Welfare and Development, and La Castellana municipal government.

Various concerns were discussed, including learning continuity and appropriate assessment strategies, temporary learning spaces, and mental health and protection of learners during emergencies.

“The safety of our learners and personnel and the continuity of education are non-negotiable whatever the circumstances. We must always be ready, at all times and at all costs,” Uytico said.

On Monday, DepEd-Negros Occidental reported that the opening of classes in all its 576 schools, with an estimated 325,000 learners, went smoothly despite the challenges posed by the continued unrest of Mt. Kanlaon.

Schools Division Superintendent Anthony Liobet said the successful school opening reflected the shared commitment of all stakeholders to ensure that education continues even in times of crisis.

In La Castellana, the worst hit by the Mt. Kanlaon explosive eruption last December, the DepEd activated temporary learning spaces and alternative delivery modes and provided learning kits and psychosocial support. (PNA)
