The Negros Occidental Provincial Health Office (PHO) is closely monitoring a significant increase in dengue cases in the province, anticipating a further rise due to the ongoing rainy season.
PHO head Dr. Girlie Pinongan reported that the number of dengue infections has surged sharply, especially with the resumption of classes in schools amid the wet weather conditions that favor mosquito breeding.
According to the latest PHO data, from January 1 to June 7, a total of 2,326 dengue cases have been recorded in the province.
This represents a staggering 281.31 percent increase compared to the 610 cases reported during the same period last year.
Bago City remains the dengue hotspot with the highest number of cases, accounting for 474 infections.
It is followed by Kabankanlan City (234 cases), La Carlota City (214), San Carlos City (132 with one death), Cauayan town (120), Silay City (111 with one death), Pulupandan town (76), Hinigaran town (69), La Castellana town (68), and Talisay City (66).
Tragically, the death toll has reached seven, underscoring the severity of the dengue outbreak.
Pinongan emphasized the importance of preventive measures such as eliminating mosquito breeding sites, using mosquito repellents, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms arise.
The PHO continues to intensify surveillance and community awareness campaigns to curb the spread of dengue during this critical period./JB, WDJ
