Aid to Kanlaon-affected families in W. Visayas now at P145-M

A total of P145,583,989.76 in humanitarian aid has been provided to families affected by the continuous restiveness of Kanlaon Volcano since December 2024, based on data from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

The amount includes P117,048,693.76 from the DSWD, P13,609,484 from the local government units, and the remaining P14,925,812.00 came from non-government organizations and other stakeholders.

DSWD added that the bulk of the aid included family food packs, non-food items and financial assistance in the form of DSWD’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations and Emergency Cash Transfer.

The Disaster Response Operations Management, Information and Communications Progress Report No. 100 of the DSWD indicated that a total of 18,809 families or 68,588 individuals in 25 barangays in Negros Occidental are affected by the continuous unrest of Kanlaon as of May 26.

A total of 1,684 families or 5,433 persons are currently taking temporary shelter in 13 evacuation centers, while another 2,705 families or 8,714 persons are temporarily staying with their relatives or friends.

Kanlaon has remained under Alert Level 3 since December 9, 2024, indicating that further eruptions are possible.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the latest explosive eruption of Kanlaon was recorded on May 13, which lasted for five minutes and generated a grayish voluminous plume that rose approximately 4.5 kilometers above the vent based on seismic and infrared records of the Kanlaon Volcano Network.
