The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is urging more local government units (LGUs) in Negros Occidental to establish One Town, One Product (OTOP) Philippines Hub stores to promote products and skills-based services.
The DTI, through the Bureau of Market Development, Promotions, and OTOP recently conducted an orientation among LGUs to assist them in its implementation.
“It’s good to note there is a positive reception among the staff who attended. Two LGUs have issued executive orders stating support to the development of the OTOP,” Engiemar Tupas, chief trade-industry development specialist of DTI-Negros Occidental, said in an interview.
An OTOP Hub is a retail store or space with a signage that it is being established in compliance with the provisions of Republic Act 11960 or the OTOP Philippines Act.
Aside from Cadiz City and Hinigaran town, Tupas said they expect more LGUs to issue executive orders or pass resolutions supporting the setting up of OTOP Hubs.
He said existing product showrooms of various cities such as Sipalay, Kabankalan, Himamaylan, San Carlos, Sagay, and Talisay are expected to be converted into OTOP Hubs.
There are two OTOP Hubs in the province owned and managed by groups of local producers — the Association of Negros Producers Showroom on South Capitol Road and the OTOP Lifestyle inside the Ayala Malls Capitol Central, both in Bacolod City.
OTOP Philippines is a government flagship program that supports micro, small and medium enterprises through tailored government interventions to promote inclusive local economic growth.
It empowers communities to identify and develop products or services that reflect their unique culture, resources, creativity, and competitive strengths.
Products and services covered are processed foods; agricultural-based products; home and fashion, and creative artisanal products; arts and crafts; skills-based services and other products; and other goods and services as approved by DTI.
Under Section 7 of the law, the products must be consistent with culture, community resource, connection among the locals, creativity and competitive advantage. (PNA)
