A one-year-old girl died while her six-year-old sister was injured after a devastating fire broke out at their home in Bacolod City’s Barangay Mandalagan around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 24.
The fatality was identified as Adelin Sayon, while her sister, Angela, sustained third-degree burns on different parts of her body.
At the time of the fire, the children were asleep inside the house.
Other family members were not around when the fire occurred.
Bureau of Fire Protection-Bacolod chief, Superintendent Jenny Mae Masip, said the house owned by their mother had no electrical supply and relied solely on solar lighting.
Masip said due to the rainy weather that evening, the solar light was not functioning properly.
To provide illumination, the children purchased a candle, which they placed inside a plastic container to serve as a makeshift lamp.
Masip said the fire immediately spread.
The neighbors managed to rescue Angela while helping to put out the fire.
The blaze was extinguished at 11:37 p.m, leaving P40,000 worth of damage to property./JB, WDJ
