For the first time in the modern history of Negros Oriental, a family of four swept key elective positions in the province during national and local elections on Monday, May 12.
They are incumbent Governor Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria, incumbent 2nd District Representative Manuel “Chikiting” Sagarbarria, incumbent Dumaguete Vice Mayor Ma. Isabel “Maisa” Sagarbarria, and Chessa Sagarbarria.
Chaco was elected governor with 365,020 votes, beating close rival former Governor Pryde Henry Teves, who came in second with 254,415 votes.
Four other candidates contested the province’s top elective position.
This was Chaco’s first election as governor, after he rose to the position by rule of succession following the demise of two governors ahead of him.
Chikiting, in his third and final term, is returning as mayor of capital Dumaguete City, where he served for three terms before joining Congress.
Maisa, meanwhile, clinched the 2nd District spot, replacing her husband, and trumping incumbent Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo, who is in his last term as mayor.
Chessa, on the other hand, made it to the city council here with Sagarbarria’s lineup for councilors occupying the majority of the 10 seats.
The official results from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) at the provincial level are:
Chaco Sagarbarria as governor; Fritz Diaz, vice governor; Emmanuel Iway, 1st District House Representative; Maisa Sagarbarria, 2nd District; and Janice Degamo, 3rd District.
Those who made it to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan are Angel Amador, Jessica Jane Villanueva, and Rusty Serion (1st District); Nyrth Christian Degamo, Erwin Macias, Woodrow Maguiling Sr., and Apolinario Arnaiz, Jr. (2nd District); and Popoy Renacia, Bobot Adanza, and Carlo Remontal (3rd District).
All of them have been officially proclaimed by the Provincial Board of Canvassers, headed by provincial election supervisor Eddie Aba, yesterday. (PNA)
