The NLEX Road Warriors weathered a Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings storm to push their winning streak to four, 89-86, in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup on Wednesday, May 7, at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
NLEX appeared headed for a comfortable win after building a 17-point lead midway through, but Ginebra once again displayed its “never say die” spirit and clawed their way back. The Gin Kings eventually took an 82-81 lead after a split at the line by Stephen Holt with more than two minutes left in regulation.
Scottie Thompson kept Ginebra alive late, but Xyrus Torres was there to douse the fire, draining the most important triple of the night — also making up for a turnover moments earlier that could have been pivotal.
Torres might have failed to sink even a single foul line shot late after a Holt duty foul later on, but the Gin Kings could not turn things around, failing to regain possession.
Capitalizing on that was Robert Bolick, who showed the rookie how it was done as he completed his trip to the charity stripe to peg the final score, 89-86.
Thompson had created a shot on the corner, firing a trey to no avail as the buzzer sounded with the ball in the hands of Bolick after an NLEX rebound.
Bolick, the usual suspect for NLEX, fired up a game-high 28 points on a 10-of-14 clip, including perfect three-of-three makes from beyond the arc, rightfully earning himself the Best Player of the Game nod.
Torres and Brandom Ramirez contributed 11 markers each, while Kevin Alas also breached twin-digit territory with 10.
Holt paced the heartbroken side with 21, while Thompson also had a decent 20-point showing. (ABS-CBN News)
