The Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings kick-started their PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup campaign on the right note as they dismantled the Terrafirma Dyip, 101-80, on Wednesday, April 23, at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
Japeth Aguilar was the man of the moment for Ginebra as he exploded for 30 big points on a very efficient 12-of-15 clip from the field, to go with seven rebounds, four blocks and two assists.
He was a point away from matching his season-high at 31, and two points away from tying his career-high at 32.
“I just had time to do some reflection after our finals,” Aguilar expressed, shaking off all the pain from the recent Commissioner’s Cup finals loss.
“It’s still a long way to go, it’s only our first game,” the Ginebra center added.
RJ Abarrientos was right there to support the Ginebra offense, chipping in 14 points and seven assists, with Scottie Thompson tallying a double-double of 11 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists, while Stephen Holt delivered 10 markers.
The Gin Kings moved past the Dyip early after they unleashed a dominant 26-2 run from the end of the first canto up to the opening moments of the second frame.
It was all Ginebra by then, as the separation even ballooned to 22 at the 62-40 mark in the third quarter.
CJ Catapusan paced the defeated side with 14 points and two steals, while Mark Nonoy had a decent 13-point, three-steal outing.
