The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) is expecting a continued surge in passenger traffic at ports across the country, particularly in Panay and Guimaras, among the busiest during the Holy Week season.

In an interview yesterday, PPA spokesperson Eunice Samonte said, based on their data, the daily average number of passengers in ports in Guimaras and Panay reached more than 13,000, but it can soar to more than 20,000 during peak season.

Based on their projected passenger traffic, the average daily passenger could be as high as 19,279, or 173,509 weekly, making ports on these islands the third busiest in the country, next to Mindoro and Batangas.

“We expect more passengers this afternoon until tomorrow,” she said.

With the expected influx, she reminded traveling passengers to book early and be at ports and piers at least three hours before their travel time.

To help ease congestion and avoid delays, Samonte advised travelers to book their tickets early and arrive at ports at least three hours before departure.

In response to increasing demand and to improve passenger experience, the PPA is preparing to launch an online ticketing system in key provincial terminals before the end of the year.

The system will allow travelers to purchase tickets online or through kiosks at ports, with payment options available via cash or digital methods.

Currently, passengers must purchase tickets directly through the individual websites of shipping lines, as no centralized platform exists.

Samonte also encouraged shipping lines and maritime agencies to deploy additional vessels to accommodate the surge in travelers during peak seasons. (PNA)
