Negrense Kathryn Bugna captured three championships at the close of the Semana sang Iloilo national junior tennis championships held recently at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
Bugna, a standout from the Batang Onay Tennis Club in Negros Occidental’s La Carlota City, captured the girls’ 18-and-under crown by defeating top seed Alexandra Onte, 6-1, 6-3, in the finals.
She also claimed the 14-and-under trophy by dismantling Donarose Olavides, 6-1, 6-1, in the finals, and later the 16-and-under championship by winning over Atila de Ocampo, 6-1, 6-3.
On the boys’ side, Andrian Rodriguez emerged as the surprise package, toppling No. 1 seed Ian Ituriaga, 6-3, 7-5, to seize the 18-and-under title.
Another standout, Anthony Castigador, followed up his 14-and-under title at MAC’s Crankit with victories in both the 14-and-under (6-1, 6-3 over Francisco de Juan III) and 16-and-under (6-2, 7-6 (1) over Rodriguez) divisions.
De Juan bounced back with a solid win in the 12-and-under division, defeating Robertson Olavides, 6-3, 6-3.
Meanwhile, Donarose Olavides clinched the girls’ title with a 3-6, 4-3 (ret.) win over Diana Alcarde, and dominated the 10-and-under unisex division with a 4-0, 4-0 shutout against Kyrie Alturino./ASC, WDJ
