The Police Regional Office in Western Visayas (PRO-6) has created a group tasked with intelligence gathering and going after groups promoting vice-focused crimes, particularly drugs.
PRO6 director Brigadier General Jack Wanky led the pre-deployment briefing and send-off program for the newly-created Boracay Anti-Vice Unit at the Aklan Provincial Police Office, Camp Pastor Martelino in Kalibo, Aklan on Monday, March 31.
The 22-member specialized intelligence monitoring team will be tasked to gather sufficient evidence against criminal groups. They will augment the existing strength of the Malay Municipal Police Station.
“This unit, comprised of personnel solely dedicated to anti-criminality and intelligence operations, will spearhead campaigns against illegal drugs and related activities. Its primary objective is to actively identify and neutralize criminal threats, particularly those involving drug-related offenses,” Wanky said in a statement yesterday.
He added that the initiative is a “proactive and strategic response” to combat illegal activities and to ensure the safety and security of Boracay during the high influx of tourists during Holy Week and summer vacation.
The local police, on the other hand, will focus on maintaining essential functions such as police visibility and routine patrols.
Wanky said the deployment of the augmentation force marked the commitment of the regional office to safeguard the status of Boracay as a premier destination, ensure the safety of tourists, and boost tourism growth. (PNA)
