The Police Regional Office in Western Visayas (PRO-6) reassured the public that there is no need for concern amid the heightened alert status across the country following the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte by the International Criminal Court.
The arrest, which stems from charges of crimes against humanity related to his administration’s controversial anti-drug campaign, has led to increased political tensions nationwide.
In response, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has placed all regional offices on heightened alert to ensure the safety and security of the public.
PRO-6 Director Brigadier General Jack Wanky explained that the heightened alert status is part of precautionary measures to maintain peace and prevent any untoward incidents in the region.
“We are monitoring the situation closely, and while we are prepared for any possible developments, our main priority is to preserve peace and order in Western Visayas,” Wanky said.
The police are particularly vigilant about potential protests or rallies that may be organized by Duterte’s supporters in response to his arrest.
However, Wanky emphasized that public gatherings, as long as they have the necessary clearances, will be allowed to proceed peacefully.
“We want to make sure that any demonstrations are done in an orderly manner. We encourage peaceful expression, but we also want to avoid any disturbances,” he added.
Despite the political climate, authorities remain confident that the heightened alert will not cause undue alarm among residents.
Wanky clarified that the measures are standard protocol and are designed to protect the community.
“We assure the public that they are safe, and there is no immediate threat that should cause alarm,” he concluded.
As of now, the PNP has reported no major incidents across the country in connection with Duterte’s arrest, maintaining calm as the legal process unfolds internationally./MTL, WDJ
