The long-awaited Panay-Guimaras-Negros Island (PGN) Bridges project is moving forward, with construction on the first segment (Panay-Guimaras) set to begin in July 2026.

The Panay-Guimaras (Section A) segment has a total length of 13.616 kilometers, while the Guimaras to Negros (Section B) stretches 19.47 kilometers.

Engineer Antonio Erwin Aranaz, project manager of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Unified Project Management Office, reported to the Infrastructure Development Committee (IDC) of the Regional Development Council that the detailed engineering design for both sections is 79.75 percent complete as of February 2024, and is expected to be finalized by September 2025.

During the Economic Development Cooperation Fund pre-country program mission from January 7 to 9, 2025, financing for the PGN Bridges was among the key topics discussed.

Iloilo City Mayor and IDC Chair Jerry Treñas said he was happy that the IDC made sure that critical projects needed by Western Visayas are always reviewed and endorsed by the national government for proper funding and action.

Treñas described the PGN Bridges as a major accomplishment of the IDC.

“This dream has been with us long before I became a congressman. Finally, we can say it’s a dream come true,” he said.

Discussions will also be held with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources regarding marine animal concerns and submarine cables that may be affected by the construction.

Treñas, who will step down as mayor and IDC chair at the end of June 2024, received recognition for his contributions to the project during the event, marking his final IDC meeting. (PNA)
