The Department of Health in Negros Island Region (DOH-NIR) reported 96 cases of firecracker-related injuries as of yesterday, highlighting the dangers posed by unsafe practices during the holiday festivities.

At least 62 cases involved minors as victims, the data added.

Of the number, 64 individuals suffered burns from the blast, 26 had eye injuries, and four cases were blast victims with amputation.

Negros Occidental has the highest number of cases with 59, followed by Bacolod City with 20, Negros Oriental with 15, and Siquijor with two cases.

Among the firecrackers, triangle topped the list with 19 of the victims incurring injuries, 15 were caused by kwitis, 11 were caused by five-star, and 10 were from unknown fireworks.

The injuries ranged from minor burns to severe hand and eye trauma, with the potential for long-term consequences.

The report underscores the persistent risks associated with firework use, despite government efforts to promote safer celebrations.

The DOH, along with local government units, has been actively campaigning for a safer New Year revelry through the “Iwas Paputok” program, urging citizens to avoid hazardous fireworks and consider alternative methods of celebration, such as community fireworks displays.

Despite these efforts, injuries remain prevalent due to non-compliance and the widespread use of prohibited firecrackers.

Medical personnel have been on heightened alert since the start of the holiday season.

Hospitals and clinics across the region are equipped to treat firework-related injuries, and public health teams have been deployed to monitor cases and ensure swift medical intervention./JB, WDJ
