At least 21 firework-related injuries were recorded in the Negros Island Region (NIR) from December 21 to 29, the latest data from the Department of Health (DOH) in the region showed.

Negros Occidental accounted for the highest number of injuries, with 14.

It is followed by Bacolod City with three cases, while Siquijor and Negros Oriental each reported two incidents.

Sixteen of these injuries involved minors, underscoring the risks children face with firecrackers, the DOH-NIR said.

The types of injuries varied, with some victims suffering from burns and blast injuries, while others experienced eye injuries caused by various fireworks, including sparklers and popular local varieties like “boga” and “five star.”

This alarming statistic highlights the dangers associated with the use of firecrackers, particularly as the New Year approaches.

Local health officials are urging residents to opt for safer alternatives to firecrackers.

Dr. Ma. Girlie Pinongan, Negros Occidental provincial health officer, recommended using noise-making devices such as drums or pots instead.

The DOH has also launched campaigns promoting fireworks safety and encouraging local governments to organize community fireworks displays.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and remind everyone to keep fireworks out of reach of children and to report any illegal sale of firecrackers.

NOCPPO on heightened alert

The Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) is on heightened alert status for the New Year.

NOCPPO spokesperson Police Captain Judesses Catalogo said the primary focus of the provincial police force is to maintain order and security during the New Year celebrations.

“We want everyone to enjoy the festivities, but safety must come first,” Catalogo stated.

The heightened alert status will involve increased police visibility in public areas, thorough monitoring of potential trouble spots, and community engagement initiatives to promote awareness.

In addition to maintaining security, the NOCPPO is actively campaigning against the use of firecrackers.

Catalogo emphasized that firecrackers contribute significantly to accidents and injuries during this time of year.

“Every year, we see a rise in cases related to firecracker-related injuries and house fires. Our goal is to minimize these incidents,” he said.

The police are urging residents to consider safer alternatives for celebrating the New Year.

The authorities have made it clear that individuals caught using illegal fireworks or firearms during the celebrations may face serious legal consequences./JB, WDJ
