99-K students affected; ‘Kristine’ forces class suspensions in NegOcc, Bacolod

A total of 663 public schools in 13 local government units in Negros Occidental, including capital Bacolod City, suspended face-to-face classes due to bad weather brought by Tropical Storm “Kristine” yesterday.

Latest data from the Department of Education (DepEd) in Negros Occidental showed 27 public schools in E.B. Magalona town, 29 in Talisay City, 31 in Hinoba-an town, 32 in Isabela town, 14 in Don Salvador Benedicto town, 24 in Moises Padilla town, 37 in Binalbagan town, and 32 in Ilog town suspended classes due to inclement weather.

Eighty-one public schools in Cadiz City, 48 in Escalante City, 119 in Kabankalan City, 64 in Himamaylan City, and three in San Carlos City have also cancelled classes.

In-person classes at all levels in both public and private schools are cancelled in the cities of Cadiz, Victorias, Sipalay, Sagay, Silay, Himamaylan, and San Carlos, as well as the municipalities of E.B. Magalona, Pontevedra, Cauayan, Calatrava, Pulupandan, Binalbagan, Don Salvador Benedicto, Manapla, Isabela, Candoni, Valladolid, and Toboso, and Bacolod City on Wednesday, October 23.

Public and private schools will shift to the modular modality of learning.

In Bacolod, 70 public schools declared the cancellation of classes yesterday.

DepEd said 728,455 students in Western Visayas were affected by the suspension of face-to-face classes.

Of the number, 99,044 are from Negros Occidental.

The suspension resulted in some 982,359 learners shifting to alternative delivery modes, the department said.

Earlier, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said “Kristine” might bring more heavy rains until Saturday, October 26.

Floods brought by inclement weather since Sunday night, October 20, affected some parts of Sagay and Cadiz, as well as Barangays Taloc, Tabunan and Dulao in Bago City.

Several residents in the affected areas have been evacuated, PDRRMO head Irene Bel Ploteña said.

In its 5:00 p.m. bulletin yesterday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said “Kristine” slightly intensified, packing maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center, and gustiness of up to 90 kph.

The weather disturbance is forecast to move generally northwestward until it makes landfall over Isabela or northern Aurora in the next 24 hours, Pagasa said.

“Kristine” is likely to exit the Philippine area of responsibility on Friday, October 25. / With reports from PNA / JB, WDJ
