The Negros Occidental provincial government has distributed cash aid worth P1.155 million to former New People’s Army (NPA) rebels based in central Negros to help them earn a living after returning to the fold of the law.

Anna Marie Lucasan, officer-in-charge of the Provincial Planning and Development Office, said yesterday the assistance is funded under the Provincial Peace and Order Council initiatives.

In a report, the Philippine Army’s 303rd Infantry Brigade (IBde) said 42 individuals, who surrendered to the 94th Infantry Battalion (IB) based in central Negros, received the checks during the turnover ceremony held at Mambukal Resort and Wildlife Sanctuary on October 18.

The recipients included 35 regular NPA rebels who received P30,000 each as well as seven Yunit Militia members who got P15,000 each.

Lt. Colonel San Agustin, executive officer of 303 IBde, said that along with the Provincial Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, they hope that the former rebels will join in nation-building for more peaceful and progressive communities.

“We reiterate our call and all-time open invitation to those who are still up in the mountains struggling to decide now. Approach us, lay down your arms and avail of the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program,” he added.

Lt. Colonel Ziegfred Tayaban, commanding officer of 94IB, said the cash assistance not only provides financial help but also sends a strong message of unity and hope to the former rebels.

“It reinforces our peace-building efforts and shows the government’s commitment to supporting those who choose peace and development in Negros Occidental,” he said.

Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson earlier said that after the former rebels have surrendered through the efforts of the Philippine Army and the Philippine National Police, it becomes the duty of local government units to support the surrenderers and show them that they made the right decision for peace and progress in the province.
