Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Western Visayas (BFAR-6) director Remia Aparri called on collective efforts on fish conservation, in time for the 61st anniversary of the Fish Conservation Week celebration.
Highlighting the theme of this year’s celebration, “Sama-sama Tungo sa Maunlad at Likas-kayang Pangisdaan sa Bagong Pilipinas,” she urged a unified approach to ensure a thriving and sustainable marine environment.
“Our theme highlights the importance of collective action in protecting our marine resources. By working together — fisherfolk, policymakers and youth — we can achieve a future of sustainable fisheries aligned with our vision for a Bagong Pilipinas,” Aparri stated.
“Our path forward is clear. We must continue to strengthen our enforcement against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing while promoting the use of legal, sustainable fishing gears and practices,” she added.
The BFAR 6 kicked off a week-long celebration on September 16.
According to BFAR, the event underscored the region’s ongoing dedication to sustainable fisheries and marine resource protection.
One of the highlights of the celebration was the recognition of three active Fisheries Law Enforcement partners, which include the Sipalay City Bantay Dagat, Iloilo Provincial Bantay Dagat, and Capiz Provincial Bantay Dagat.
He relayed his community’s sentiment stating, “Indi namon kinahanglan sang tag-apat ka gantang nga bugas. Indi namon kinhanglan sang tag-anum ka lata sang sardinas. All you have to do [referring to the authorities], please take care of our seas.”
Edsel Toledo, an agricultural technician from Sipalay, noted the significance of the gesture.
“The plaque is just a plaque. But if seen by our members, it will boost their morale and increase their strength,” Toledo expressed.
Police Regional Office-6 Director Brigadier General Jack Wanky, represented by Brigadier General Archival Macala, served as guest of honor, lauding the ongoing efforts of BFAR and other stakeholders against illegal fishing.
He noted that nearly P2.3 million worth of fish was confiscated through 844 operations last year. This year, over P2 million worth of fish has been seized in 739 operations.
“We are all called to lift a finger to protect and become better stewards of our municipal waters, seas, and oceans for our good and for the well-being of future generations,” Wanky stated in his message.
As part of the week-long celebration, there were a series of activities across the different provinces of the region to further promote fish conservation and sustainable practices. (PIA-6)
