San Enrique in calamity state

The municipality of San Enrique in Negros Occidental has been placed under a state of calamity due to the impact of the southwest monsoon or habagat enhanced by Tropical Storm “Ferdie.”

The municipal council passed Resolution No. 2024-078 yesterday, declaring a state of calamity in the town.

The declaration was based on Resolution No. 3, submitted by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC).

This will prompt the municipal government to utilize its quick response fund from the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund, which will extend relief assistance to affected families and to repair or rehabilitate damaged infrastructure.

According to the MDRRMC resolution, the town experienced prolonged heavy rains resulting in flooding that affected 9,262 families or 29,823 individuals.

At least 869 families or 1,945 individuals have been evacuated.

San Enrique Mayor Jilson Tubillara said all 10 barangays have experienced flooding in the past few days.

Tubillara added that they are still assessing the cost of damage to agriculture and other infrastructure./WDJ
