Health officials in Negros Occidental are urging residents to take immediate action to prevent a surge in dengue cases in the province.

Data from the Provincial Health Office from January to June 29, showed Negros Occidental recorded a total of 712 dengue cases, a 7.55 percent increase, higher than the 662 cases reported in the same period last year.

Hinoba-an town logged the highest number of cases, with 70.

It was followed by Sipalay City with 64 cases, including one fatality; Cadiz City (63), San Carlos City (53), Silay City and Cauayan town (46 each), Kabankalan City (43), Talisay City (33), Victorias City (32), and Sagay City (30).

The majority of cases were children aged one to 10 years old.

Three dengue-related deaths were recorded this year, the data added.

PHO head Girlie Pinongan said they are focusing on their efforts to combat dengue in the localities, particularly in Hinoba-an and Sipalay, as more patients were hospitalized.

They have already advised chief executives in local government units to set up sanitation interventions to prevent cases from surging further.

Pinongan also stressed the importance of maintaining a clean environment amid the rise in dengue cases.

“It’s crucial that we inspect our surroundings regularly to identify areas where water may be collecting and potentially breeding mosquitoes,” Pinongan said.

Residents are advised to seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms of dengue, such as high fever, headaches and joint pain./JB, WDJ
