Negros Electric and Power Corporation president Roel Castro explains the distribution utilities’ role in ensuring power reliability, sustainability and affordability.

During the “Negros Electric Power Forum” organized by the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MBCCI) at a hotel in Bacolod City yesterday, Castro delved into the technical difficulties of power distribution, referring to the blackouts which affected Negros and Panay islands recently.

He outlined Negros Power’s forthcoming plans for regulation, standardization and modernization of power distribution in Central Negros.

Castro said the industry’s focus will rely on improving monitoring systems, strengthening regulations, and cracking down on illegal connections to enhance overall power security and reliability.

The Negros Power president pointed out upcoming projects, such as the Cebu-Negros-Panay backdoor initiative, which will enhance efficiency in power supply and distribution.

He said the load profile management will adapt energy sources to seasonal fluctuations and will increase demand.

The forum, which aims to address critical issues concerning power distribution on Negros Island, was convened by key industry stakeholders and local government officials to deliberate vital topics, ensuring a sustainable and robust power supply.

Bacolod City Councilor Thaddy Sayson, speaking on behalf of Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, discussed the significance of reliable power distribution, while he recalled personal experiences of appliance damage due to power fluctuations.

He stressed the need for a more efficient and dependable power supply in the city, linking it to the local government unit’s progress.

Meanwhile, Councilor Claudio Jesus Puentevella also echoed concerns about power reliability and its implications on the city’s evolution into a “supercity.”

The councilor highlighted the urgency of resolving power interruptions to avert further economic setbacks for local businesses.

He also expressed worries about the cost of electricity.

On the other hand, MBCCI vice president Frank Carbon shared insightful observations on the power industry.

Carbon, also the co-chair of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s energy, power and water committee, stressed the need for industry players to collaboratively work together, while highlighting the Electric Power Industry Reform Act.

He also proposed the establishment of a coordinating council for power security to foster regular meetings, and develop a strategic roadmap for the future.

The collaborative efforts showcased at the Negros Electric Power Forum symbolize a promising step towards a more sustainable energy future for Negrenses.
