The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) in Negros Occidental urged the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) of Talisay City to resolve their issues, after two city councilors nearly came to blows during their regular session.
The conflict between Councilors Rolin Meliton and Randy Ereñeta stemmed over the city government’s housing program.
In a radio interview, DILG-NegOcc Cluster Head 2 Jean Quistadio, said they had already received the initial incident report, but they have not yet received complaints either from Meliton or Ereñeta.
Quistadio said the councilors should forward their concerns to proper court, as the department lacks jurisdiction in legal matters.
Meanwhile, Meliton has broken his silence over the incident, stating that he has no ill feelings towards Ereñeta.
Meliton said there was no malice intended, adding that he and Ereñeta are close friends.
He further expressed that he understood Ereñeta’s emotions, as he chose to step back.
Earlier, Meliton delivered his privilege speech in their regular session regarding the city government’s housing program, wherein he raised several concerns.
During the speech, Meliton reportedly directed his remarks to Ereñeta, who chairs the city’s housing committee.
Ereñeta tried to address Meliton’s concerns, but there was no clarity on the issue.
A heated argument ensued between both parties.
Talisay Vice Mayor Nic Jalandoni broke the heated exchange by calling for a recess.
However, Ereñeta stood up from his chair and allegedly tried to approach Meliton.
The incident was only averted after other SP members intervened.
They suggested giving both parties time to cool down, adding that the conflict between the two is just a misunderstanding./DGB, WDJ
