The Negros Oriental provincial government and the Dumaguete City government joined the country in the observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) from November 25 to December 12.

To intensify awareness of the campaign to end VAW, the Provincial Commission on Women (PCW) launched the observance with a Kapihan sa PIA forum.

The forum discussed gender gaps and other measures to achieve the recurring theme of “UNiTED for a VAW-Free Philippines.”

Women advocates, along with barangay and city government officials, kicked off the 18-Day Campaign to End VAW with a community dance to the tune of “Isang Bilyong Babae Ang Babangon” at Presidencia grounds in Dumaguete.

Mayor Felipe Antonio Remollo underscored the support and commitment of the city government in protecting and advancing the rights of women.

He assured to ensure violence-free homes, workplaces and communities through consistent implementation of programs, projects, and awareness campaigns in the city.

City Councilor Maria Marife Cordova urged adults to show that they respect women so that children will emulate their values.

One of the activities lined up by the PCW for the weeklong observance is the recognition of women’s advocates through its “Garbo Awards” on December 7.

Hundreds of women advocates are also expected to join the women’s summit on the same day, while gender sensitivity training is set for provincial government employees and an orientation on women’s laws for multi-sectoral representatives.

The increase in the number of VAW cases this year has been attributed to increased public awareness, resulting in more women reporting abuses. (PIA-7 Negros Oriental)
