A 46-year-old woman died after she was dumped by a pile of sugarcane from a truck that crashed on its side in Negros Occidental’s Ilog town yesterday morning.

The fatality was identified as Alma Claridad, a resident of the town’s Barangay Tabu.

Eyewitness accounts said Claridad, along with her husband, were walking to work when they noticed a sugarcane truck descending on the road.

The truck suffered a tire burst and crashed on its side, spilling all the sugarcane stalks to Claridad.

Bystanders tried to retrieve Claridad from the pile.

A backhoe from a nearby construction site was used for the rescue attempt.

Police are now looking for the truck driver, who had reportedly fled the scene after the incident./DGB, WDJ
