The Bacolod City College (BCC) will increase tuition fees from P30 to P250 per unit, following the approval of the board resolution recently.

Councilor Al Victor Espino, chair of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on education, said the board of trustees during their meeting unanimously approved the proposed resolution to increase the tuition fee of the said school.

He cited that for many years since it operated, BCC never had any increase in tuition fees, and now the board has approved it to the maximum amount of P250 per unit.

He added that the low tuition fees have affected the school’s operations.

The BCC is among local universities and colleges which offers free tuition and miscellaneous fees under Republic Act 10931, or the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act.

Espino explained that even if BCC will increase tuition fees, students will not be affected because it is fully-subsidized by the national government.

“Wala na diri galastuhan ang estudyante. That subsidy is coming from the national government,” he claimed.

The school needs to generate its own resources so that it can sustain its own operation.

The BCC is a community college operated by the city government.

It was established by virtue of City Ordinance No. 175, series of 1997, known as the Charter of BCC./MS, WDJ
