The Explosive and Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOCPPO) is planning a controlled disposal of the 1,000-pound vintage M65 general-purpose bomb that was unearthed from a quarry site in Cadiz City last week.

Police Lt. Jester Minguez, EOD team leader, said residents in Barangay Magsaysay’s Purok Lambunao must be informed a week prior to the bomb’s disposal.

Minguez said they have already coordinated the disposal with the quarry site landowner.

He added the EOD will detonate the bomb at the site where it was found, as it could be too dangerous to move it someplace else.

Residents were told to stay away as the bomb could still be live.

According to the National Museum of the United States Air Force website, the M65 bomb is typically used against reinforced targets such as dams and concrete or steel railroad bridges.

The bomb could also be used to target ammunition dumps, aircraft and warships.

NOCPPO spokesperson, Police Captain Judesses Catalogo said, during World War II, the Imperial Japanese forces operated an airfield in the village and was likely the target of the allied forces.

The bomb was unearthed by a backhoe operator on July 24./DGB, WDJ
