A Grade 2 student was choked after eating candies at a school at Barangay Zone 4 in Negros Occidental’s Cadiz City on Friday morning, April 14.
Authorities identified the fatality as nine-year-old Zyrus Escalicas of the city’s Barangay 1.
Cadiz City deputy police chief, Captain Gina Fernandez, said Escalidas was eating candies during recess at Cadiz East Elementary School, when he suddenly choked on the food.
Escalicas sought the help of his class adviser, Lyn Villalon.
Villalon said he saw the student’s face turning black.
The teacher and several parents at the school rushed Escalicas to the hospital, but he passed away due to suffocation.
Meanwhile, the Cadiz City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and the City Social and Welfare and Development will conduct a stress and psychological debriefing for Villalon and Escalicas’ classmates who witnessed the incident./DGB, WDJ
