The Bacolod City government plans to upgrade the city’s Handumanan public cemetery after a spot inspection was conducted by Mayor Alfredo Benitez on Saturday night, March 18.

“Sad to say, I saw the very poor state of Handumanan cemetery. That is why I had a meeting to thresh out all the problems, aside from the physical appearance of our cemetery,” Benitez said in a press conference at the Bacolod City Government Center yesterday.

“It speaks a lot to how we treat our dead. It is very poor and it is not commensurate with your loved ones to be there,” Benitez said.

“It’s something nga napabay-an for a long time,” he lamented.

The upgrading and the issues arising in the cemetery were discussed in the meeting.

He also found out that the cemetery had become a medical waste disposal site of the City Health Office.

“Something has to stop. We will create a permanent solution for medical waste. It should not be there,” he said.

“I will discuss this with the Department of Public Services to provide a medical waste disposal system [in the city],” he added.

The mayor said he conducted a spot check at night so that he could see the actual situation of the cemetery.

“Kadulom kay wala gid suga, waay gid facilities,” he said./MS, WDJ
