A local teachers group calls for additional guidance counselors for all schools in Bacolod City.
In a radio interview over Aksyon Radyo, Bacolod City Public School Teachers Association Chairman Richard Gelangre said schools in the city are lacking guidance counselors.
Gelangre said, based on standards, there should be one guidance counselor for every 200 students.
However, he claimed that in Bacolod, the ratio is a guidance counselor for more than a thousand students.
A guidance counselor’s job is to assist and advise students about their academic and personal decisions, and provide counseling for students.
Gelangre pointed out that the issue should immediately be addressed as it would lower incidents of violence between students and teachers, and lower suicide incidents among students due to poor mental health.
These days are now different as morals among the youth are now defective, and students need a guiding hand for them to perform better, he said./DGB, WDJ
