People need to eat clean and uncontaminated food from the public market. Thus, the local chief executive should ensure that the taxpayers will get their money’s worth – clean, spacious, comfortable, foul odor-free public market.

A clean and spacious public market is a proof of how good a local government unit (LGU) is. It also follows without saying that the local chief executive is a good leader and has leadership skill. He knows very well that he has the duty to provide a clean and comfortable public market for his constituents especially this time of COVID-19 pandemic.
The local chief executive must bear in mind that his/her constituents and taxpayers deserve the best from the local government. If he/she doesn’t know this then he/she has no reason to be in public service. Most of the people go to public market to buy essential, basic commodities for their families, and what an irony if the food they buy will come from a dirty market which is exposed to dirty surroundings and foul odor.
People need to eat clean and uncontaminated food from the public market. Thus, the local chief executive should ensure that the taxpayers will get their money’s worth – clean, spacious, comfortable, foul odor-free public market. A local chief executive must not only visit the public market during election season. It is incumbent to all local chief executives to see to it that their public markets are clean and worth a visit.
I had the opportunity years ago to be invited by Senator Migz Zubiri along with some members of the local media in Bacolod to visit Bukidnon province. We had the chance to visit several towns in Bukindon. We were surprised that the father of Zubiri who was the governor then has the tenacity to visit public markets early in the morning everyday to check the cleanliness despite the fact that public markets in Bukidnon are so clean, spacious and orderly.
This only showed how a good leader the father of the province was. We were amazed that the delivery of basic services can be felt directly by Bukidnon citizens. Aside from their public markets, their public hospitals were also clean and orderly. We visited some of the hospitals and barangay health facilities and we could say that the people of Bukidnon were under the baton of a good leader.
Here in Negros Occidental there are also a lot of municipalities and cities with clean, spacious and orderly public markets. Public hospitals in some of the LGUs are also well taken care of by the provincial government. Himamaylan City and E.B. Magalona towns are among those that have their new public markets. E.B. Magalona Mayor Marvin Malacon made sure to provide the taxpayers the public market they deserve. It is worth emulating considering the fact that even Bacolod City, a lone district and a billionaire city, has no public market like that in E.B. Magalona.
Repainting the Libertad Public Market in Bacolod is not enough especially that it is situated at the center of the city and in front of a mall. E.B. Magalona, meanwhile, is not a billionaire town located in the northern part of Negros Occidental, but its leader knows how to prioritize the need of his constituents. The local government is spending the taxpayers money properly.

Good leaders can properly utilize the minimal resources at hand. They can do great things because they know how to prioritize urgent matters. The tenacity to serve in whatever situation makes them good men. They are not boys anymore but real men who can do extraordinary things. Yes, the world really needs men who are not beholden to anyone, men who can lead his team to greatness./WDJ
