Fight over basketball escalates into hacking in Sipalay

A fight over basketball has led to a hacking incident last Wednesday afternoon in Cabadiangan Proper in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

Police identified the victim as 32-year-old Rody “Kumpol” Sta. Ana, a resident of Purok 4 in the city’s Barangay 2.

Based on an investigation carried out by Sipalay City police, the suspect identified as 29-year-old Ronel Macubay of the city’s Barangay Mambaroto was playing basketball with his friends when Sta. Ana arrived and took the ball from the suspect.

The victim then slammed the ball in to Macubay’s chest, prompting the suspect to pull out a bolo in his backpack, followed Sta. Ana and proceeded to hack him in the left arm and back.

The suspect immediately fled to his house aboard his motorcycle carrying the bolo, while bystanders rushed Sta. Ana to the city’s infirmary for treatment.

A follow-up operation later resulted to Macubay’s arrest. He is now detained at the Sipalay City Police Station and he could face criminal charges./DGB, WDJ
