Two earthquakes were recorded in Negros Oriental yesterday morning. A 2.0-magnitude quake struck just north of Canlaon City at 12:16 a.m., while a 2.6-magnitude tremor was detected off the coast of Basay at 6:27 a.m.
A subsequent Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) bulletin indicated there were no damages as a result of either quake nor were there any anticipated aftershocks.
Earthquakes ranging between 1.0 and 3.0 in magnitude are often classified as a Level 1 on the Mercalli Intensity Scale, where the tremor goes almost undetected.
Phivolcs raised the alert level for Mt. Kanlaon to “Alert Level 1” earlier this month after recording new activity in the area. Based on a bulletin issued on March 11, the seismic monitoring network at the volcano recorded at least 80 volcanic earthquakes since March 9./WDJ
