Mayor: Social distancing is difficult on jeepneys
Following a consultation with Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Regional Director Richard Osmeña, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas announced jeepneys in the city will be barred from carrying passengers. However, he noted, jeepneys being used to transport goods will still be permitted.
“Mabudlay mag-social distancing ang aton mga pumoluyo sa PUJ (It is difficult for city residents to conduct social distancing on a jeepney),” the mayor explained.
Available modes of public transportation in Iloilo City include buses, taxis, tricycles, and pedicabs; however, he noted, tricycles and pedicabs are only permitted on local roads.
Meanwhile, the LTFRB official said 10 buses will be permitted to operate in the city, with health workers not required to pay the P10 fare.
Osmeña added, LTFRB is ready to dispatch more buses if the initial 10 are not enough./WDJ
