Iloilo City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas recently issued a memorandum order banning single-use plastics from City Hall and parks.
“As part of the effort of the city government to educate and curb the use of single-use plastic items that pollute waterways, kill marine life, and contribute to our country’s increasing solid waste, you are hereby directed to follow the implementation of the plastics bans,” the order declared.
Among the banned items include drinking straws; coffee stirrers; spoons; forks; knives; along with thin and translucent plastic bags, often referred to as ‘labo.’
The mayor noted, the order was necessary after the amount of plastic waste collected at city plazas and parks, along with the Iloilo River Esplanade.
“Ang tanan madala na lang sa ila nga containers para indi na kita nagay usar sang plastics (Everybody must bring their own containers in order to avoid using plastics),” he urged City Hall employees./WDJ
