Following the recent arrest of Bacolod City Criminal Investigation and Detection Group head, Police Major Melvin Madrona, on allegations of extorting local KTV operators, Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson reminded police officials that their duty is to protect every Negrense and should not take advantage of their position or enrich themselves.
“That’s not the kind of officer that we want here in the province,” the governor said. “What happened in that entrapment is really a disgrace to this person.”
“He [was] very new [to] Negros Occidental, especially Bacolod City, and he [did] that,” he added. “It’s an abuse of the law, especially for an officer who is supposed to apprehend violators and protect every individual from harm.”
Lacson then issued a challenge to law enforcement agencies, stating, “Be a partner to protect the people.”
He added, Madrona will have his day in court and be given the opportunity to defend himself.
The police official was earlier arrested by the Philippine National Police-Integrity Monitoring and Enforcement Group in Barangay Mansilingan alongside a civilian accomplice, identified as Jay-R de la Cruz.
Both have since posted bail./DGB, WDJ
