The NLEX Road Warriors completed a sweep of the Phoenix Super Basketball Tournament yesterday after scoring a 104-97 win over the Phoenix Pulse Fuel Masters at the Upper Deck in Pasig City.
After seeing their 21-point lead trimmed to 100-97 with 43.9 seconds left on the clock, Joseph Ronald Quiñahan delivered a massive jumper from the post to make it a five-point match. The Fuel Masters failed to edge closer as Road Warriors rookie William McAloney stole the ball during the subsequent possession and went for an uncontested layup with five seconds left to ice the victory.
Quiñahan topscored for NLEX with 15 points, four assists, and three rebounds; Philip Paniamogan scored 13 points; Negrense center Raul Soyud contributed 12; and Pedrito Galanza and Kevin Alas each added 10.
“We got [off to] a good lead but we relaxed in the latter part of the fourth quarter; to me, that’s a bad sign,” said NLEX head coach Joseller ‘Yeng’ Guiao. “That’s something I think we can fix in the next few weeks”
Despite the loss, Jason Perkins finished with 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists for Phoenix; while Jorey Napoles fired 20 points, with 10 coming in the playoff period; and Matthew Wright shot 3-of-9 from distance to finish with 20 points, five assists, and three boards.
